Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is an atopic, hereditary, and non-contagious skin disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the skin. Atopic dermatitis skin reacts abnormally and easily to irritants, food, and environmental allergens and becomes red, flaky and very itchy. It also becomes vulnerable to surface infections caused by bacteria. The skin on the flexural surfaces of the joints (for example inner sides of elbows and knees) are the most commonly affected areas. This universal skin disorder usually manifests in infants 1-6 months old, and 60% of patients experience first flare-up by age of 1. Children with asthma and hay fever have a 30-50% incidence of developing Atopic dermatitis.
